The Mighty Oak America's National Tree

The oak-studded hills of San Luis Obispo County are as much a part of the area's landscape as is the dramatic coastline. A wonderful example of centuries-old coast live oak trees can be found at Los Osos Oaks State Reserve, located on Los Osos Valley Road, near the town of Los Osos. Included in the reserve are dwarf oaks (they rarely grow more than six to eight feet tall) growing on ancient sand dunes. Hiking trails allow visitors to see these impressive trees up close and personal, and one of the trails goes through remnants of an old Chumash Indian dump site. www.parks.ca.gov
